I love this stuff. Animals are curiously intelligent. This week, it’s corvids who possibly pass the mirror test, a test of self-awareness only completed by apes, dolphins, orcas and elephants.
It’s a simple test. The animals is shown itself in a mirror. Some animals like cats and dogs simply ignore it or try to attack the image. Smarter animals try to look behind the mirror to see the person. However self-awareness is confirmed by the following method; a bright, odourless dot is put on the animal. When the animals is then shown the image in the mirror, those of higher intelligence notice the dot and investigate it on themselves. They therefore recognise themself and have the capacity for self-reflection.
