Neutral Milk Hotel only made one album and called it In The Aeroplane over the Sea. If you’ve never heard it, its outstanding and rightly credited as one of the best albums of the decade (90s). Mixing up a whole host of instruments but mostly acoustic, Jeff Mangum muses over love, loss and triumph from the 1940s to the present on a bizarre but incredibly listen-able album. The last tune linked below, sounds like the perfect send-off, a tribute to his family and upbringing. It’s really moving and satisfying.
Magnum never really recorded again. Like Syd Barrett, he disappeared from the scene, though occasionally popped up to play an unscheduled acoustic set. This December, he will curate the ATP festival in Minehead hosting Panda Bear, Fleet Foxes and himself. It’s a rare occasion to see one of the great, secluded artists of the modern music era.
