Gary Speed

I wrote an article entitled ‘The Gravity of Sport’ recently after seeing this article entitled ‘The Ultimate Sacrifice’ concerning sportsmen dying in their sport on the BBC. I argued that sacrifice is close as to altruism as we can get. Throwing yourself on a grenade to save your fellow soldiers is a form of altruism.  Its not sportsmen/women playing for money and/or glory.

This Gary Speed story offers true perspective about sport. Speed played for my team but I never cared particularly for him as a player. That fitted his role, a solid workhorse. However as a man he stood out, a dignified leader and having I watched Football Focus last Saturday and now knowing he hung himself while his family slept that night, its all pretty shocking and desperately sad.
